Addicted To Reading

As a writer, this is not such a bad thing.

Or perhaps it is. Time spent on reading other people's (published) books are my number one reason I'm not at the laptop, typing madly.

Oh, that and my duties as a mother.

I would like to say I'm just a fiction junkie, but that's just not the case. I think I have a serious reading addiction problem. Others turn to drugs and alcohol to escape (okay, we all know how much I love that pink champagne, God bless the stuff), but I, however, turn to reading for my escapism.

Writing, too, but then writing can sometimes be just such hard work. Other times, it's my major joy and pleasure, but most of the time, it's hard. It's not easy to write those sexy scenes, to come up with plots and endings and middles and beginnings and characters you want to follow their journey with.

But picking up a book, especially one by your favourite author...that is oh so easy, and not work at all.

But I read everything, not just my beloved fiction. Magazines. Non-fiction. Uni textbooks. Biographies. How-to books. Junk mail. Shampoo bottles while I'm in the shower (and I used to pick up typos for the haircare company I used to work for because of this addiction).

I'll read packaged food, drink labels, a discarded bus ticket. Yes, I have a serious problem.

I can't get enough of reading.

I hear about these writers that don't read a single book while they're working on their own book. I fall over and faint (much like a pig) when I hear this kind of thing!

My brain just can't comprehend it. Not reading? Who are these people? How can they not read??

My love of reading seems to have transferred to my daughter. She takes books with her wherever she goes, and her bed resembles a library at night-time. She loves books.

I guess there are worse addictions I could have passed on to my daughter.

And there's nothing quite like getting your Jackie Collins trashy-novel fix while she takes a catnap.

August, September and November always suck for me.

As long as I can remember those 90 days have always been depressing and lead to my deepest soul searching.

But then December comes, and things begin to pick up. Last year after a horrible 3 months of pain sadness and lonelyness I entered December with the highest feeling in the world. Something happened to me that I never thought would happen back in August. From December through to August this year I was the happiest man in the work. And then of course the dreaded three months hit agian.

But I cannot say I wish those three months did not occur. Because without feeeling soo down and depressed about my life I can not enoy when the great months happen.

The month where you get the great job.
The month where you achieve something that was hard for you.
And for me the most important month. The one where you fall in love.

And what makes the moments within these months soo great is that you never know when the good months will be and when the bads ones will suprise you and kick you in the privates. Everyone has there bad months. There all different for us.

Without the bad months you can never ever appreciate the good ones.

Hi K.L.

Love reading. Always have. My husband doesn't really understand why I like to immerse myself in a 1000 page novel night after night. Can't help it, just love it.

My children also love books which I'm very thankful for. Can't get a better start in life than that.

To Federline,

I'm sorry to hear you've been through a lot...what is it with certain months of the year??

Yes, the bad times make us appreciate all the good and great times.

Thanks for reading, and commenting!

To A.H.

I kind of knew you would be an avid reader, since we seem to be so spookily similiar!!

I'm lucky that my husband is somewhat of a reader...I think he likes collecting books more than actually reading them.

But he's nowhere near as compulsive as me!

You got me at the word escapism. Books and a library always induce a sense of homecoming, sanctuary and/or comfort. I spent the first thirty-something years of my life ... buried in the pages of books. However, unlike you ... my preference is contemporary fiction and romance.

I'm also one of those writers who rarely read, except for the Bible, when I'm writing. I'm deathly afraid that a certain phrasing might stay with me and that I'll unconsciously use it and find myself at the end of a lawsuit... LOL.

Great post!

Peace,
Dee

Hi Dee!

Thanks for reading...

Yes, I can see what you mean about the law suit...I guess it is hard not to be influenced by other people's writing...

But I still think you develop your own voice along the way, via both reading and writing.

I'm glad to hear there's a romance fan out there!!

Gee KL, you could have been writing that post about me! As long as I can remember I've been a reader.

I usually read anywhere from 3-5 books a week. I read magazines, if I leave the office at lunch to grab some food and I'm alone I have to read something. Food labels, menu's anything.

When I go on holidays I the weight of my suitcase is pretty evenly split between books and clothes. I even have a couple of well read books in my car for those times that I find myself somewhere waiting and have nothing to read.

I've never thought about it before, but you could right in calling it an addiction.

As a mother you probably don't get much of an opportunity to do so, but when I really want to pamper myself I grab a good book, a glass of wine or champers and jump into the spa. I can highly recommend you try it some time....bliss. Just don't drop the book!

Hi KylieW,

Well, you had such wonderful taste in liking my book, so of course you'd love reading!!

I wouldn't have expected anything less of you!

Oh, I would pay to do the reading, champagne, spa trick...

Maybe in another sixteen years??

No, I squeeze my reading time in much the same way I squeeze my writing time in...when the little one is asleep!

But my favourite nights are those (rare) rainy nights, and I'll jump into bed with a book and listen to the rain fall.

With a glass of champers, of course!

That is true bliss!

Thanks for reading (my post, not reading full stop)!

K.L.
